International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also observed in support of taking action against gender inequality around the world. We all know the world couldn’t run without women (we mean, just listen to Beyoncé). This is the day to appreciate their efforts! Organizations large and small come together to show women just how valuable they are in today’s society.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Susan B. Anthony was a political activist and an advocate of women’s rights. After the Civil War, she fought for the 14th Amendment that was meant to grant all naturalized and native-born Americans citizenship in the hope that it would include suffrage rights. Although the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, it still didn’t secure their vote. In 1869, the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) was founded by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to continue the fight for women’s rights.
In the early 1900s, women were experiencing pay inequality, a lack of voting rights, and they were being overworked. In response to all of this, 15,000 women marched through New York City in 1908 to demand their rights. In 1909, the first National Women’s Day was observed in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. This was celebrated on the last Sunday of February until 1913.
An International Women’s Conference was organized in August 1910 by Clara Zetkin, a German suffragist and leader in the Women’s Office. Zetkin proposed a special Women’s Day to be organized annually and International Women’s Day was honored the following year in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with more than one million attending the rallies. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified and white women were granted the right to vote in the U.S.
The liberation movement took place in the 1960s and the effort led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act, allowing all women the right to vote. When the internet became more commonplace, feminism and the fight against gender inequality experienced a resurgence. Now we celebrate International Women’s Day each year as we push continuously with the hope of creating a completely equal society.
TRADITIONS OF THE DAY
As women come together to celebrate the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights on International Women’s Day, they receive ample support from men who give them flowers or other gifts. This tradition extends to educational institutes and workplaces as well. Inspiring female leaders and women with success stories in different areas of life are put in the spotlight to encourage and influence other women all over the world.
In Spain and Turkey, political activities and protests take place on this day. The aim is to motivate change in policymaking. In China, women are often allowed a half-day off from work and receive special treatment in general at work and home.

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_GROUP_facebook_cover-National_Ugly_Sweater.G.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
Every third Friday of December, people all over the nation trade their casual garments for something more festive for National Ugly Sweater Day. Whether you find a hidden gem to wear, or you make your own, one things for sure — this holiday will certainly have you laughing all day long!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL UGLY SWEATER DAY
Ugly sweaters have been around for as long as people created a concept of fashion. They weren’t always made purposefully — maybe someone made a mistake in their knitting, or tried a new design that didn’t turn out as cool as they thought it would. However, it wasn’t long before grandmas everywhere were knowingly (maybe while chuckling to themselves) knitting their grandchildren ugly Christmas sweaters complete with baubles and “I love Grandma” lettering. They knew what they were doing. We’re watching you, grandmas.
However, mass market ugly sweaters made their purposeful debut in the 80s. Popular character Bill Huxtable on The Cosby Show constantly made fashionistas gasp when he’d come into scene in a gaudy, ugly, yet slightly endearing sweater that he knew was completely outrageous. In 1989, Chevy Chase added his own twist to the theme as Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation movie.
It seemed the 90s were eager to get rid of the ugly sweater trend, but it reared its “ugly” head back into public eyes in 21st century Canada. Two men from Vancouver came up with the idea to throw the first official tacky holiday sweater party to raise money for their friend’s cancer treatment. The party was a hit, leading the way for similar events to show up all over the northern hemisphere. Ugly sweater parties went from small holiday get togethers to huge events, sometimes in support of charity. Today, ugly sweater parties and competitions are one of the highlights of the season, with everyone trying to one-up each other in searching for the most appalling outerwear they can find. The sweaters have gone from accidentally tacky to purposefully shameless. The only way this celebration can be more extra was if there was a holiday dedicated to it…oh wait! There is!
NATIONAL UGLY SWEATER DAY ACTIVITIES
Find an old ugly sweater and make it new again
Take a cue from the original ugly sweater pioneers and search through your local thrift store for an ugly sweater that is begging for a second chance in the spotlight! From brightly colored sweaters, to ones covered in jingle-bells and more, the opportunities to find a hidden gem are endless.
Make your own ugly sweater
Bring your friends together to make your own ugly sweaters! Pick up a couple of basic sweaters along with some fabric glue, tape, or a hot glue gun. Collect the most extravagant decorations you can find; think tinsel, string lights, or even googly-eyes, and then get to it. Who can make the best (read: ugliest) one?
Give back with an ugly-sweater fundraiser
What better way to celebrate National Ugly Sweater Day than to help others while doing it? Give back to a cause that is important to you by hosting an ugly-sweater bake sale, an ugly-sweater jog, or even just a simple ugly-sweater party.
2021-12-18T05:00:00-07:002021-06-17T06:32:12-07:00Diane Mullinstag:thechrisfoxgroup.com,2012-09-20:18618NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_GROUP_facebook_cover-NPearl_Harbor.G.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
A day of infamy, the day Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, is commemorated with the National Pearl Harbor Day of Remembrance each year on December 7. On that day in 1941, more than 2,400 people died in Japan’s attack on the Hawaiian base of America’s Pacific Fleet. Hundreds of aircraft were destroyed or damaged, as were most of the ships in the harbor, and thousands of service men and women were killed or injured. It was an unprecedented surprise attack that precipitated the United States entry into WW II as we sided with the Allies and declared war on Japan.
WHY NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR DAY OF REMEMBRANCE IS IMPORTANT
It was the worst attack on American soil by a foreign country
The United States was in peace talks with Japan when Japan launched 350 warplanes in a surprise air attack on Pearl Harbor, home of the Pacific Fleet. 330 U.S. planes and 19 ships were damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people were killed or injured.
The Pearl Harbor attack drew the United States into WW II
Japan’s designs on the Philippines, then a territory of the United States, precipitated theirattack on PearlHarbor in an attempt to destroy the Pacific Fleet and buy time for them to conquer what they referred to as the Southern Resource Zone. Up until then, the mainly isolationist position of the US prevented our entrance into WW II. That position disintegrated with the attack, as the American people united in a call to war —a call that eventually lead to the Allies winning that war.
It is a day to honor our military
This is a good time to think of the hardships and ordeals endured by our service men and women every day and everywhere in the world. The United States is in a position of being the policemen of the world, with hundreds of thousands of service men and women deployed in the protection of our country and people everywhere. Remember them in your actions and your prayers.
NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR DAY OF REMEMBRANCE DATES
Send a care package to a member of the Armed Forces overseas
Find a local organization sending care packages—there should be one in your community. Basic grooming needs, phone cards, canned treats, even just a kind note of appreciation are all simple expressions of concern that mean so much to soldiers thousands of miles from home. Get your church or civic organization to help and your impact will be so much greater.
Loved ones staying at home need comfort too
The families left behind often struggle with expenses and loneliness while their husbands and wives are overseas. Adopt a family in your community and be there to offer help. It could be as simple as attending the kid’s games, dropping off some food, or giving a gas card. Small acts of kindness can help keep a family together even when they are apart.
Treat yourself well, too
The life you are living today would be impossible without the sacrifices of December 7 and of all the wars this country has been in. Honor the memory of those lost by living the best life you can, and work to make life better for those coming after you.

Historically, daylight saving time (DST) has begun in the summer months and ended right before winter, though the dates have changed over time as the U.S. government has passed new statutes, according to <a href="http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/daylight_time.php" data-url="http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/daylight_time.php" data-component-tracked="1" class="hawk-link-parsed">the U.S. Naval Observatory</a> (USNO).
In 2021, DST begab on March 14 and ends on Nov. 7 in the U.S., when you'll set the clock back an hour and the cycle will begin again. Daylight saving time in the U.S. will begin again on March 13, 2022, according to timeanddate.com.
WHY DID DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME START?
Benjamin Franklin takes the honor (or the blame, depending on your view of the time changes) for coming up with the idea to reset clocks in the summer months as a way to conserve energy, according to David Prerau, author of "<a href="http://www.seizethedaylight.com/" data-url="http://www.seizethedaylight.com/" data-component-tracked="1" class="hawk-link-parsed">Seize the Daylight</a>: The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time" (Thunder's Mouth Press, 2005). By moving clocks forward, people could take advantage of the extra evening daylight rather than wasting energy on lighting. At the time, Franklin was ambassador to Paris and so wrote a witty letter to the Journal of Paris in 1784, rejoicing over his "discovery" that the sun provides light as soon as it rises.
Even so, DST didn't officially begin until more than a century later. Germany established DST in May 1916 as a way to conserve fuel during World War I. The rest of Europe came onboard shortly thereafter. And in 1918, the United States adopted daylight saving time.2021-11-05T04:00:00-07:002021-06-16T10:05:11-07:00Diane Mullinstag:thechrisfoxgroup.com,2012-09-20:18612National Native American Heritage Month
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_GROUP_facebook_cover-National_American_heritage_month.G1.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
Every year in November , Native American Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the remarkable Native Americans who have contributed a lot to improve the character of the nation. This month is also referred to as the American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. November is the time to rejoice in diverse and rich cultures, histories, and traditions and to appreciate the great contributions of the Native Americans. This month allows us to spread awareness about tribes or to educate people about the various challenges faced by the Native Americans in the past and today. Throughout this month, we commit to keep on supporting the remaining Native American tribes and let the world know about their sacrifices.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
National Native American Month started off as an effort to get a day of appreciation and acknowledgment for the unique contributions made by the first Americans for the growth and establishment of the United States. The effort has now resulted in a whole month being celebrated for that purpose.
Dr. Arthur C. Parker was one of the first supporters of having an American Indian Day. He was a Seneca Indian and the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, New York. He was also the one to convince the Boy Scouts of America to create a day for the Native Americans — the Boy Scouts adopted this day for three days.
In 1915, a plan concerning American Indian Day was formally approved in the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting. The president of the American Indian Association, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, called upon the country to observe this day.
The first time American Indian Day was declared was in May 1916. In 1990, a joint resolution was approved by George H.W. Bush, which called for November to be named National American Heritage Month. Declarations like these have been issued since 1994, such as Native American Heritage Month and National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.
HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_GROUP_facebook_cover-Boss_day.G.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
October 16 is National Boss’s Day, a chance to celebrate the people who keep us gainfully employed! “Boss” has been used as slang to describe something cool or excellent, so if you are blessed with a great boss, you could call ‘em a boss boss. Whatever you call them, do a little something for the boss in your life.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL BOSS'S DAY
In 1958, Patricia Bays Haroski registered National Boss’s Days as a holiday with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in honor of her father, who was also her employer. She created the holiday to improve office relationships between supervisors and their employees as well as raise cognizance to all the hard work boss’s put into their jobs. She felt as if younger employees didn’t appreciate their bosses enough, and knowing first hand what her father went through to make a company run smooth, set out to change that viewpoint. However, it wasn’t until Illinois Governor Otto Kerner supported Haroski’s registration four years later, that the day officially became a national holiday.
NATIONAL BOSS DAY TRADITIONS
The main tradition on Boss Day is if you have a great boss, find a way of letting them know. Whilst some go beyond this and buy a card or a gift, it’s not really necessary.
NATIONAL BOSS'S DAY ACTIVITIES
Chip in to make their days great
In honor of the day, why not get a cute greeting card for you and all of your coworkers to sign? Or pitch in to buy a fun gift or something that they've talked about needing. Have a hard-to-buy-for boss? Consider making a donation in their name to a local charity.
Tell them what they mean to you
Send your boss a heartfelt email telling them how much you appreciate them. If you’re feeling fancy, you can write an old-fashioned letter thanking them for the inspiration and dedication they've shown to you. Either way, they'll appreciate you appreciating them.
Help out on the job
Unless you know your boss’s tastes in books or flowers, try an intangible gesture. Ask them what step you could take to make their job easier. The reply might be something as simple as showing up on time or making sure the printer paper gets refilled—but it could also be a chance to grow as a professional and take point on a daily report or a quarterly goal. Either way, the offer to go above and beyond will doubtless be appreciated.

WHAT IS FARMERS DAY?
Farmers Day is celebrated every year on October 12! The profession of farming began around 12,000 years ago with the domestication of livestock as hunter/gatherers settled down and started to plant their own food. In short, farming is one of the oldest jobs around. So let‘s take a moment to give some love to all the farmers who work tirelessly to feed us year round.
Farmers Day in the U.S is observed on October 12 every year. Other countries celebrate the holiday on different days, with India and Pakistan holding large celebrations in December.
HISTORY OF FARMERS DAY
Agriculture is one of the world’s oldest and vital professions. Farmers have remained one of the highest contributors to economic growth while consistently feeding the people who rely on their goods. Originally referred to as Old Farmer’s Day, National Farmers Day was cultivated to celebrate the hard work farmers put into growing their crops. The date of October 12 came about as it lands at the end of the traditional harvesting period, allowing farmers to participate in festivities, which can sometimes last the entirety of the month. Additionally, every three years, the Harvest Moon will fall in early October, preceding and leading up to National Farmer’s Day on the 12th.
In fact, in Loranger, Louisiana, there’s an Old Farmer’s Day Festival which celebrates and showcases the traditions and methodologies of farming before it became the modernized and scientific venture it is today. Usually, in states in the northern US, the first frost would occur in the beginning of October, if not the middle, requiring many farmers to harvest their crops beforehand to prepare for the winter. Now, because of scientific developments in farming techniques, the traditional growing period can be prolonged to increase yield and profit, part of the reasoning why National Farmer’s Day tend to extend its celebrations in rural areas to National Farmer’s Month.
TRADITIONS OF NATIONAL FARMERS DAY
Thank a farmer
They’re the backbone of the breadbasket and what feeds not just this country, but many other nations as agriculture is usually a major export. Make sure you thank a farmer today for all their hard work keeping bread on tables everywhere!
Buy from a local farmer
One of the best ways to thank a farmer is with your wallet. Head to a farmer’s market or join a local CSA (community supported agriculture) to get some fresh, local produce, eggs, or even grass-fed meat.
Start a garden
Or become one yourself! Growing your own food is one of hte most sustainable and rewarding ways to celebrate National Farmer’s Day. It may have a tough learning curve to plant and grow just a few tomatoes, but the taste of tomatoes right off the vine will make it all worth it.
FARMERS DAY ACTIVITIES
Go to a farmers market
Support your local farmers by shopping at the local Farmer's Market. Keep in mind that by shopping with small businesses, you are helping an entrepreneur provide for their family or expand their business. America has a history of family farming and your support helps keep their dreams alive.
Start your own mini-farm
According to one of the top Kansas City PR Firms, only 2% of Americans grow their own food. What better way to celebrate National Farmers Day than to become your own farmer? Think how awesome would it be if your favorite fruits or veggies were growing in your backyard. Don't have a yard? No Problem. Many neighborhoods have community gardens where you can test out your green thumb.
Earn your stripes with a farmer's tan
We're not saying to throw out your sun block, but it might be fun to show solidarity with your local farmers by sporting your own t-shirt tan! Enjoy the sunny day outdoors and learn the true meaning of a Farmer's Tan.

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_GROUP_facebook_cover-Talk_like_a_pirate.FB.G.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
Children and adults all over the world are captivated by the idea of pirates. Although historically pirates were thieves and marauders, recent popular culture has revitalized their image. Now people see them as symbols of adventure, freedom, and of course, raucous behavior. That’s probably why people all over the world can’t help but observe International Talk Like A Pirate Day on September 19th. Although this is a parody holiday on which people spend the day dressing up as a pirate, acting like a pirate or using some popular pirate catchphrases such as “Avast Land Ho,” “Land Lubber,” “Arrr” and “Ahoy me maties,” it’s also a day that a lot of people take very seriously. If you feel like this is a holiday that you simply have to celebrate, then you need to grab your rapier, put on your tricorn pirate hat, and grab your octant. It’s going to be a day spent making people walk the plank, or at the very least, buy that pirate outfit that you’ve been looking for a reason to buy.
The History Of International Talk Like A Pirate Day
This day was created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers as a result of a racquetball game between the two. How does a day on the racquetball court result in the creation of a holiday dedicated to talking like a pirate? Well, it all started when one of them injured themselves and loudly reacted to the pain by screaming “Arrr.” They both laughed at this expression of pain and then they had a light bulb moment. This is when they got the idea to create the holiday. Of course, the holiday would remain an inside joke between the two men for approximately 7-years, but then word got out about it. Now it’s a holiday that’s been celebrated by people all over the world since 2002.
Fun Facts About Pirates
Since we understand that a lot of people want to do more than talk like a pirate on this holiday, and they actually want to immerse themselves in the pirate culture, we thought that we’d give them some fun pirate-themed facts to get them started.
Blackbeard’s name was Edward Teach, sometimes spelled Edward Thatch.
Blackbeard would weave hemp into his beard and set it on fire before he captured a ship. That must’ve been a terrifying sight indeed!
Some famous female pirates include Anne Bonny, Ching Shih, and Mary Read.
Customs, Traditions, And Celebrations Of International Talk Like A Pirate Day
The whole purpose of International Talk Like A Pirate Day is to talk like a pirate, but some people take it a little further than that. No, I’m not suggesting that they actually become pirates on the high seas. No, they merely dress up like pirates and attend pirate-themed parties or other fun, costumed events. After all, the whole point of this holiday is to have a little fun and be a little bit silly. It’s a great way to blow off some steam or let people see your silly side.

Nearly every aspect of daily life is made possible because a truck driver delivered the goods and resources people need.
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is an important time for America to pay respect and thank all the professional truck drivers for their hard work and commitment in undertaking one of our economy's most demanding and important jobs. These 3.5 million professional men and women not only deliver our goods safely, securely, and on time, they also keep our highways safe.
This year's National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is September 12-18, 2021, and takes on a special significance considering the crucial role truck drivers have played during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Americans in all fifty states have taken extraordinary steps to show their appreciation for the important work that professional truck drivers have done as we navigate our way through the coronavirus pandemic. <img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_GROUP_facebook_cover-Rainbow_Bridge.G.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
Just about everyone has had a pet that has passed on and that’s why Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is such an important day to so many people. This day is celebrated on August 28th every year and is a day on which people can remember the pet companions that have died over the years. This makes it a great day for pet owners to mourn the loss of their pets—pets that had become trusted members of their family.
The History of Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day
This day was first celebrated on August 28, 2013, when Deborah Barnes invented it to say goodbye to her cat, Mr. Jazz. She was an author and a blogger of Zee & Zoey’s Cat Chronicles, which helped her get the word out about this day of remembrance. From then on, it has begun to gain a life of its own and now people are celebrating it all over the world.
Facts About Our Pet Friends
Pets are an integral part of so many of our lives, so any discussion of this observance day would be remiss without talking about the pets that are the centerpiece of this day. Below are some interesting facts about pets that most people are going to appreciate.
Over 85 million cats & 78 million dogs live in the United States.
Approximately 40% to 46% of pet owners learned about their pets through word of mouth.
25%-27% of all cats acquired are picked up as strays.
Cats spend approximately 20% of their entire day grooming themselves.
Cats have more than 100 different vocalized sounds.
A dog’s smell is so sensitive, it could detect a teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic swimming pools of water.
A dog’s paw print is as unique as a human being’s fingerprint.
Dogs aren’t completely color blind. They’re can see yellow and blue.
Dog’s eyesight is better in low-light conditions than a human’s eyesight.
Dog’s eyesight is better for tracking moving objects than human eyesight.
Humans can see further distances than dogs.
Dogs are capable of sweating—they just sweat through their paw pads.
Crocodiles cannot stick out their tongues.
Greyhounds are the world’s fastest dogs with a top speed of 45 miles per hour.
Less than 10% of dog owners throw a birthday party for their pet.
How To Celebrate Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day
One way to celebrate Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is by taking the time to remember past pets. This can be done by just having a remembrance party, visiting their grave, or by whatever other means a person wants to celebrate the lives of their past pets. The hashtag #RainbowBridgeRemembranceDay can also be used on social media to spread the word about this holiday and to honor past pets. 2021-08-28T04:30:00-07:002021-06-09T07:25:44-07:00Diane Mullinstag:thechrisfoxgroup.com,2012-09-20:18641National Dog Day
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/dog_day.G.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
Can you believe that our furry friends have been with us for at least 14,000 years? Thank goodness for that because what would we do without man’s best friend? It is time to pull out all the cake and pictures of your pup and share your love for them with the world!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL DOG DAY
Dogs are a man’s best friend for a reason, so why not celebrate them? These furry friends range in all different shapes, sizes, and breeds. There is a dog out there for everyone! Whether you like big dogs or small dogs, every pup should be celebrated on National Dog Day.
This holiday was created in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate. She created this day so that all dogs can be celebrated and also to draw attention to the number of dogs in shelters and to encourage adoption to those who have yet to find a place to call home. August 26 is significant to Colleen because it is the day her family adopted her Sheltie when she was 10 years old.
Since the first celebration in 2004, National Dog Day has grown and is now celebrated across the world. In 2013 the holiday was written into New York legislation and can be seen on the New York State Senate’s website.
To spread the word further, those that oversee the holiday have joined forces with many rescue partners, including The Human Society of The United States and West Coast Labrador Retriever Rescue. Together they draw attention to the number of dogs that are without a home and try to actively encourage people searching for a dog to visit an adoption shelter instead of a pet store.
Since the first day back in 2004, it is estimated that approximately one million dogs have been saved through adoption in the U.S. For dog owners that aren’t looking to add to their family, National Dog Day has become a day for treating their friend like the legend they are and enjoying the connection that we’ve built up with dogs over thousands of years.
Colleen Paige, the founder of the holiday, also uses the day to draw attention to the multiple ways in which dogs contribute towards our society. From putting their lives on the line to help law enforcement track down bombs or drug dealers to providing assistance for those who need it, dogs play an important role. Nowadays dogs can even identify cancer in patients.
National Dog Day has also been using its platform to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and continuously pushes for all dogs to be allowed to live happy and abuse-free lives.
National Dog Day is on an upward trajectory and continues to grow in popularity. It is widely covered in the media each year and rescue homes are the all-important exposure they need to get their message across. Whether you choose to celebrate by volunteering at a rescue home, making a donation to a shelter, or by giving your furry friend an extra big cuddle, make sure you spend this day acknowledging just how awesome dogs are.
NATIONAL DOG DAY ACTIVITIES

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/radio_day.jpg" width="1200" height="541" />
On August 20, we’ll be coming to you on all frequencies for National Radio Day. Radio was once one of the most incredible technologies on Earth – used by militaries and governments alike for navigation, news distribution, and more. It made news and music more accessible and brought us closer as a nation and a planet. Though today we rely more heavily on the internet and television for what we once relied on radio for, radio is far from dead and increasingly appreciated for its vintage and fantastic content.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL RADIO DAY
Though we typically attribute the invention of the radio to Gugliemo Marconi in the 1890s, the process spanned decades, with many scientists making small but significant contributions to the understanding of electromagnetic induction, electric conduction, and radio waves. For example, Heinrich Rudolph Hertz discovered radio waves in the 1880s, which helped prove a theory of electromagnetism put forth by James Clerk Maxwell in 1873.
It took quite a bit of time after the discovery of the radio for the technology to be used as communication – this was both because the inventors hadn’t yet realized the practical and life-changing applications of their development and because there were many more components needed to transmit and detect electrical waves. However, Marconi finally figured out a way to communicate with radio long-distance, and he takes the credit for the invention of what we think of as the radio today.
Public radio broadcasting has its own inventor and that’s Lee de Forest. He transmitted the first public radio broadcast, which featured the voices of opera stars, in 1910. De Forest’s Radio Telephone Company went on to manufacture the first commercial radios which could pick up a signal from miles away.
Obviously, radio was huge for music and changed the landscape of the industry immediately. News took to the radio, as well, and announcers could quickly hop on air to deliver the happenings of the day to a massive audience. The first radio news program was broadcast on August 31, 1920, out of Detroit – at a station that survives today as WWJ. In the early 20th century, radio also began to be used for broadcasting sports, aiding telephone services, and even navigating by airplane.
With the digital revolution and the wireless era, radio changed and adapted. Today, though radio is used for a variety of functions, it no longer holds its former top slot in entertainment and news media. With television, the internet, and more, it’s hard for radio to compete in that space – but people still love it, and it doesn’t look like radio is going away anytime soon. In fact, we appreciate radio even more these days for its old-school vintage.
NATIONAL RADIO DAY ACTIVITIES
Promote your favorite station
We all have a favorite radio station. You know, that one that just knows when you need to hear a sad song? That shares your exact political views? That telepathically plays the song you were JUST thinking about? Celebrate your station by giving them a boost on social media with the hashtag #NationalRadioDay. Last year, more than 200,000 tweets with that hashtag were sent out, and organizers are hoping to beat their record!
Donate to your local radio station
Radio isn’t big-budget as it once was and chances are your local radio station would welcome a helping hand. To keep public broadcasting alive, donations aren’t just helpful, but necessary. Think of it as paying them back for all the music and information you’ve received over the years.
Pick up a personal radio
Need a project? Pick up a fixer-upper radio from an antique or thrift store, and try your hand at getting it singing again. The work can be satisfying and you’ll learn a lot more about the science behind the radio!

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_Lobby_TV_Screen-NAtional_thrift_shop_day.G.jpg" width="1600" height="900" />
Observed on August 17th, National Thrift Shop Day is a holiday on which people are encouraged to head to their local thrift store and enjoy some deals. Thrift stores, or second-hand stores as they’re sometimes known, sell a variety of used household goods, clothing, and other types of merchandise for rock-bottom prices. Many of these stores operate as non-profits, so visiting one of them can be a good way to raise money for some organizations. These thrift stores are also looking for donations, so bringing them some of your stuff can be a great way to help a charitable organization while you’re reducing your own personal clutter.
The History Of Thrift Stores
Since we were unable to discover the history of National Thrift Shop Day, we are forced to instead talk about the history of thrift stores. Even though people have been reusing clothing and household goods for hundreds of years, it wasn’t until the 19th century that the thrift store was born. Why? Well, because people tended to do very different things with their used clothing than to donate it.
For example, if a woman had a dress that was worn out, she would trim it up and maybe make a pinafore out of it for her daughter. Once that article of clothing was worn out, she might then turn that dress into rags or used it to stuff the cushions on a piece of furniture. It wouldn’t be until the 19th century that rapid growth in urban centers and a mass wave of immigration led to the development of the thrift store. As the populations of cities exploded, the personal space of residents began to shrink and more stuff had to be tossed out. It was during this time that not only thrift stores begin to spring up but also pawn shops and scrap yards also began to rise.
In 1897, the Salvation Army was launched out of a men’s shelter’s basement. In 1902, another thrift store, Goodwill was launched by a Methodist minister. Goodwill hired poor and disabled people to collect goods and to do repairs on them. Thrift stores continued to be opened over the next several years and by 1920, they were as prevalent and organized as department stores.
Fun Facts About Thrift Stores
As we researched this holiday, we came across some fun facts about thrift stores, and we’re going to share these facts with everyone reading this right now.
Not all thrift stores are nonprofits.
Thrift stores often have high-quality items.
Buying from a thrift store can prevent clothing from ending up in landfills.
Thrift stores are a good place to buy wood furniture at discount prices.
Thrift stores are a good place to purchase books.
Observing National Thrift Shop Day
National Thrift Shop Day can be observed by patronizing your local thrift store or by making a donation to one of the many thrift shops that operate as nonprofits. While you’re celebrating this holiday, be sure to use the hashtag #NationalThriftShopDay on your social media accounts to spread the word about this holiday.

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/records.jpg" width="1415" height="800" />
National Vinyl Record Day on August 12 is your chance to go old school. Spin music lovers all around the world have disagreements on a number of things, but one thing we think everyone can agree on is that vinyl records are here to stay. For those who value the quality of sound, owning physical copies of your favorite albums, or simply the nostalgia factor, it’s probably safe to assume you’ve got your own collection of vinyl records stashed away somewhere. So now’s your time to dust off the old needle and let the music take you away on a cloud of good, good, good, vibrations.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL VINYL RECORD DAY
Music enthusiast and founder of the first nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the cultural influence of vinyl, Gary Freiberg created National Vinyl Record Day as a way to honor the art behind the music, collecting, and recording.
Also known as a phonograph record, the first vinyl ever created was by American inventor Emile Berliner in the 1890s. By 1895 record players were released to the masses, but soon became dominated by the rise of radio. Though record players still sold well in the 30s and 40s, it wasn’t until the 60s and 70s that the golden age of records reached its peak. The first cassette was released in 1962 and gave vinyl some stiff competition. Because cassettes were more portable and able to rewind, fast forward, pause, play, and stop at the touch of a button, consumers latched onto the new technology. In 1974, the development of the Compact Disc (CD) began, which nearly drained the vinyl market in 1988. From 1988-1991, there was a continued decline in vinyl sales, with only collectors and audiophiles remaining loyal to the format. However, since then, records have made a huge comeback for a number of reasons with what is now called “The Vinyl Revival.” Today we recognize the positive impact vinyl not only had on our lives, but also on music itself.
Freilberg explains that “The objective of Vinyl Record Day is to remember that, whatever we go through on a personal or national level, life has its goodness. Music is the primary vehicle to our fondest memories, Vinyl Record Day is to celebrate and remember them.” This event will hopefully say, “Let’s remember our favorite music, let’s remember fond memories, let’s celebrate our good times.” And we couldn’t agree more!

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/Amelia.jpg" width="584" height="182" />
Born on this day in 1897, Amelia Earhart is one of America’s most beloved pioneers in aviation and, today, on National Amelia Earhart Day, July 24, we celebrate her life and achievements. While many remember her for her mysterious disappearance in her internationally anticipated flight around the world, she had a life filled with achievements and trailblazing. Read on to learn about the many contributions she made to the world of aviation.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL AMELIA EARHART DAY
National Amelia Earhart Day celebrates the inspiring life of famous American pilot, Amelia Earhart. July 24 was chosen in honor of her birthday but no other details of how the holiday came about are known.
Amelia Earhart’s love of flying began in December 1920, with her first flight in California with World War II pilot, Frank Hawks. Soon after this life-changing experience, in January 1921, Earhart started flight lessons under female pilot Neta Snook. Later that year, she bought her first plane, a yellow Kinner Airster, which she named ‘The Canary.’
She received her National Aeronautics Association license in December 1921, just one year after her own first flight and, from there, the sky was her limit! Throughout her life, she achieved many records, the first one in 1922 when she became the first female pilot to fly solo at 14,000 feet.
Earhart was the first female to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo in 1932. To that point, Charles Lindbergh had been the only other person in the world to accomplish this. Earhart was the first female awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Congress.
In 1929, Earhart helped form The Ninety-Nines, an international nonprofit organization whose mission was to advance women in aviation. Launched by 99 women pilots at the time, The Ninety-Nines continues to inspire the new generation of women pilots through education, scholarships, mentoring, and general support linked by a passion for flight.
Earhart’s fateful flight around the world began on June 1, 1937, out of Oakland, California. She and navigator Fred Noonan left New Guinea on July 2 with 7,000 miles remaining of their journey. However, this would be the last day they’d be seen alive. Their disappearance remains a mystery to this day, although numerous theories have been proposed.

National Gorgeous Grandma Day is a holiday that’s observed every July 23rd and is used as a day to honor those women who are grandmothers but still feel as young and vital as they ever did. Even though this holiday has the term grandma in it doesn’t mean it only applies to women who have grandchildren. No, it’s also a holiday in which people can honor women over the age of 50—regardless of whether they have children or not.
The History Of National Gorgeous Grandma Day
National Gorgeous Grandma Day can be traced all the way back to the 1980s. This is when Alice Solomon created the holiday in 1984. She invented this holiday after graduating college at the age of 50 and discovering that people have preconceptions about women that age and older. She certainly wasn’t ready to resign to the quiet life and she felt that many women over 50 felt the same. So she created this holiday as a celebration of life for women who have lived half a century but aren’t ready for the rocker quite yet. After all, just because a person is over 50 doesn’t mean that they’re a senior citizen.
Fast Facts About Grandmas
If you want to know a little bit more about the women who are the center of this holiday, then you’ve come to the right section of this holiday. Below are some very interesting facts that we’ve discovered about grandmas and would like to share with everyone reading this article right now.
The average age of a grandparent in the United States is 48.
Jack Nicholson and Eric Clapton grew up thinking that their grandmothers were actually their mothers.
Whoopi Goldberg was a grandmother at the age of 34.
According to several surveys, up to 40% of grandmas have sex at least twice a week.
Approximately 10% of grandmas have tattoos, but that number is beginning to rise.
Approximately 85% of grandmothers also bake cookies.
Approximately 43% of grandparents play sports or exercise regularly.
About 3/4ths of grandparents are regularly using the Internet.
Grandparents control up to 75% of the wealth in the U.S.
One study found that children are 50% less likely to be injured in cars driven by their grandparents.
Approximately 63% of grandmothers say they do a better job caring for their grandchildren than they did for their children.
Almost 70% of grandmothers believe that being a grandparent improves their relationship with their adult children.
Observing National Gorgeous Grandma Day
This holiday can be observed in one of two different ways. If you’re a gorgeous grandma yourself, you can treat yourself to a day at the spa or perhaps a day out shopping. If you’re not a grandma, then you can acknowledge the grandmas in your life, or at the very least, use the hashtag #NationalGorgeousGrandmaDay on your social media accounts to give a shout-out to all of the gorgeous grandmas out there. 2021-07-23T04:30:00-07:002021-06-09T07:06:11-07:00Diane Mullinstag:thechrisfoxgroup.com,2012-09-20:18575Monday Motivational Moment!<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_Motivational_2-7.G.jpg" width="1000" height="632" />2021-07-19T04:00:00-07:002021-06-09T13:31:01-07:00Diane Mullinstag:thechrisfoxgroup.com,2012-09-20:18608Easy 'Budget Friendly' Dinner Recipe Of The Week ~ Hot Dog Sliders with Mango-Pineapple Salsa<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_Recipe_of_the_week.G.jpg" width="2000" height="1200" />

On July 4, Most Americans will grill in their backyards, at beaches or in parks — launching sparklers at dusk. Some Americans will march in parades or in protests. But despite heated politics and divided loyalties, Americans come together on July 4 to acknowledge our nation’s birthday. National Today is kicking off the festivities with details, trivia and anything else you ever wanted to know about Independence Day. Happy Fourth!
HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE DAY
Although most of you got this history lesson in school, we know you weren’t really paying attention as the clock ticked closer to recess or the end of the school day. But we can’t fully appreciate your freedoms if we don’t know how we got them — and, more importantly, how close we came to losing them. The story of America’s independence is truly fascinating with more historical twists and turns than we can possibly get into here. But at least we can get you started with the basics.
If you think Americans are an unruly lot today, consider what it took to get here. In the 1700s, we weren’t really a nation of ‘united states.’ Instead, there were 13 colonies with distinct personalities and an ornery predisposition to territorialism. (Your assignment is to look up the original Thirteen Colonies yourself since we’re busy telling the story.)
From 1763 to 1773 Britain’s King George III increasingly squeezed the colonies as he and British Parliament enacted a succession of draconian taxes and laws. Excessive taxes on British luxury goods like tea and sugar were designed to benefit the British crown without any regard for the hardships of the colonists. By 1764, the phrase “Taxation without representation is tyranny” spread throughout the colonies as the rallying cry of outrage.
The more the colonists rebelled, the more King George doubled down with force. Imagine if enemy soldiers not only had the right to enter your home but the soldiers could demand that you feed and house them. The Quartering Act of 1765 allowed British soldiers to do just that.
But the Stamp Act of 1765 became the straw that broke the colonists’ backs. Passed by Parliament in March, this act taxed any piece of printed paper including newspapers, legal documents, ships’ papers — and even playing cards! As the colonial grumbling got louder and bolder, in the fall of 1768, British ships arrived in Boston Harbor as a show of force. Remember, the British Navy dominated the seas all over the world due to the far-reaching presence of the British Empire.
Tensions boiled over on March 5, 1770, in Boston Harbor during a street fight between a group of colonists and British soldiers. The soldiers fired the shots that killed 47-year-old Crispus Attucks, the first American and black man to die along with three other colonists in the Boston Massacre.
In 1773, the Boston Tea Party (from which today’s Tea Party Republicans get their name) erupted when colonists disguised as Mohican Indians raided a British ship, dumping all the tea overboard to avoid paying the taxes. Continued pressure led to resistance and the start of the Revolutionary War in the towns of Lexington and Concord when a militia of patriots battled British soldiers on April 19, 1775. Conditions were ripe for American independence.
Wealthy, white colonial landowner delegates gathered in Philadelphia in 1776 to draft a document proclaiming their liberation from Britain, reaffirming their rights as free men. But whole other groups of people were excluded — Native Americans, women, slaves, and Jews.
Between 1619, when the first African slaves were delivered to Jamestown, Virginia, and 1776 20% of colonial America (about a half a million people) were enslaved. Worse, the Founding Fathers would soon specify that not only were black males not entitled to their freedom, but each man was considered only “three-fifths” of a white man when counted by census takers.
Prominent white women were pushing for their rights, too. At a time when white women of every class were unable to own land or inherit property without permission from a husband, son, or father, John Adams’ wife Abigail issued a warning: “Remember the ladies. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”
Ultimately, the drafting of the Declaration of Independence was a contentious process. After much debate over what to include and what to leave out, Jefferson, tasked with pulling the document together, envisioned a nation where “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” crystallized the very meaning of being an American.
Finally, the Declaration was fully ratified on July 4, 1776. America stands at another historical crossroads as we consider what it means to be American on July 4, Independence Day, this year.
INDEPENDENCE DAY TRADITIONS
American Independence Day parades go way back. By the summer of 1776, Americans celebrated the ‘death’ of British rule with mock funerals, revelry, and feasting. Americans still love to celebrate — and if you’re seeking a truly authentic experience, travel to Bristol, Rhode Island, home of America’s oldest Independence Day parade since 1785. Watch fife and drum corps marching bands, cartoon characters, and celebrities in vintage cars.
On Independence Day, we haul out family recipes for chili, barbecue ribs, chicken, and even tofu. We savor Louisiana gumbo and Maine lobster boils. There are zesty potato salads and delicious sweet corn roasted on the cob. Pies and cakes are laid out. Independence Day lets you get your patriotic grub on.
They chirp, whiz and bang. Fireworks originated with the ancient Chinese, spread to Europe, and later added colorful displays to early American Independence Day events. Both Boston and Philadelphia launched fireworks on July 4, 1777. John Adams told his wife, Abigail, that Independence Day “ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, bonfires and illumination.” This year, enjoy your Independence Day finale with a phantasmagorical fireworks display!
INDEPENDENCE DAY ACTIVITIES
Read the Declaration of Independence
If you're like most Americans, you've never actually read the Declaration of Independence. But if it weren't for this short but historically significant document, you wouldn't be grilling out or lighting fireworks, and you definitely wouldn't have the day off.
Watch fireworks
It's a blast — in more ways than one. Gazing at fireworks on the Fourth goes back centuries. In fact, John Adams alluded to this type of celebration in a letter he wrote to Abigail on July 3, 1776.
Visit a national landmark or historic site
America is full of fascinating historical landmarks and sites. No matter where in the country you live, there is almost certainly a site of historical importance nearby. Some ideas could include a Native American reservation, a Civil War battleground, a government building, or a war memorial.

“I want to believe.” These are the words of notorious X-Files hero Fox Mulder, who convinced an entire generation that the truth is out there – we just have to find it. But on July 2, it won’t only be sci-fi enthusiasts trying out their ET sleuthing skills, as everyone on planet earth will have to opportunity to celebrate World UFO Day. UFOs have been the stuff of legend for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that freaky flying saucers grabbed national and international mainstream attention. Since then, UFOs have captured the minds of old and young alike, and witness’ stories have proliferated around the world. World UFO Day serves as a way for everyone to come together and watch the skies on the same night in search of UFOs, but that’s not its only purpose.
Many see the holiday as a way to spread knowledge and awareness of UFOs, making a case for their existence, and hoping to make disciples out of the dubious. So why July 2? For many, this date represents the anniversary of the famed and all-but-confirmed 1947 incident in Roswell, New Mexico. Believers claim a UFO crash landed here, deep in the American southwest, but that the government has been covering it up ever since. What do you believe?
WORLD UFO DAY ACTIVITIES
Have a “Welcome to Earth” party
In case you needed a reason to throw a party, there’s plenty of opportunity here. Alien and UFO costumes are simple and funny, while the food ideas are endless. Alien cupcakes with green icing, red jello with rocket ships suspended in the middle or even prepackaged moonpies are all great ideas. For an older-earthlings party, try mixing vodka, blue curacao, grenadine, cranberry juice and sours for a Purple People Eater cocktail.
Do some investigative research
There are more than enough stories, legends and actual scientific findings on UFOs and space exploration to keep you busy for a day. Use the power of the internet to separate fact from fiction, and try coming up with your own theories on whether the truth really is out there. Finish the evening by gazing up at the stars before going to bed. You never know what you might see.
Have a UFO movie marathon
Depending how far you want to go back, try watching a few UFO films from different eras. The Flash Gordon-types of the 30s were genre-defining. The Martian marauders story typical of the 50s and 60s may be a bit campy for you, but you could have some friends over to watch them a la Mystery Science Theater 3000, and let the heckling begin. Or settle in for the visually stunning films of the last few decades - take your pick, sit back, and blast off.

<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/1396/image/FOX_GROUP_facebook_cover-National_Hotdog_month.G.jpg" width="2000" height="878" />
July marks National Hot Dog Month, a full 31 days that celebrate one of America’s most iconic foods. Hot dogs are part of American culture, summer celebrations, travel and grilling traditions, according to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council (NHDSC). They also are synonymous with the nation’s independence, with Americans expected to eat 150 million hot dogs on July 4 alone. During peak hot dog season from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume about 7 billion hot dogs.
“Let me be frank. In a time when things feel uncertain, we can be sure of at least one thing: Hot dogs make people happy and make us feel less socially distant, whether we are sitting 6 ft. apart or meeting virtually,” NHDSC president Eric Mittenthal said.
Today, there are millions of different possible hot dog and topping combinations that meet a broad spectrum of nutrition needs, tastes, budgets and personal preferences. Like other prepared meats, NHDSC said Americans can enjoy hot dogs as part of a healthy diet. A standard beef hot dog is 190 calories, with 7 g of protein and 30% of the daily recommended value of vitamin B12, a crucial nutrient for normal metabolism, brain development in children and mental clarity in adults.2021-07-01T04:45:00-07:002021-06-14T08:23:25-07:00Diane Mullinstag:thechrisfoxgroup.com,2012-09-20:18282Happy Birthday!<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userFiles/1396/image/FOX_Birthday.png" alt="a close up of a logo" />
